I've traveled many miles, shaken many hands, and given out many business cards in my networking journey. The lessons I've learned I'll now pass on to you. Just click to read more. Use the knowledge wisely ...
Networking as defined in the dictionary: [noun] - a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest.
Networking involves work. With preparation, effort and enthusiasm, you'll get a great deal out of it.
If you are part of a networking group, make sure the people in your group understand " what you do." If they don't, how can they be expected to look for opportunities for you?
After meeting someone, jot down notes on the back of their card to remind you who they are and what you spoke about.
Never make assumptions about the person you are speaking to. Everyone has friends, colleagues, and contacts, and one of them may be just the person you need to speak with.
When asking for referrals, be specific. Don't say, "who do you know that needs an electrician?" Say, "Who do you know that is refurbishing their home or office and needs lighting, or wiring?"
Understand the difference between a referral and a lead. A lead is a "cold" contact. A referral is "hot." They know who you are and are expecting to speak to you.
Remember, you have one mouth and two ears. Use them proportionately and you will be well on your way to being a successful networker.
Now go, think pure thoughts, and may the force of networking be with you ...
